Installation Guide for Rubber Paving Stones
With this guide, you can lay BORRAG rubber paving stones professionally and durably. The installation is simple and can be done without professional help.
Prepare the subgrade
Remove the top layer of soil (approx. 15-20 cm) and compact the ground with a plate compactor. For weak subgrades, we recommend an additional gravel layer of 10-15 cm.
Install base layer
Apply a base layer of gravel (grain size 0-32 mm). The layer thickness should be approx. 10-15 cm. Compact the layer thoroughly with the plate compactor.
Create grit bed
Spread grit (grain size 2-5 mm) evenly on the base layer. The layer thickness should be approx. 3-5 cm. Level the grit with a screed rail.
Check height and slope
Use a spirit level to check the desired slope (approx. 2% for water drainage). Adjust the grit layer if necessary.
Lay rubber paving stones
Start at a straight edge or wall. Lay the stones in a bond pattern and tap them lightly with a rubber mallet. You can optionally leave 2-3 mm joint spacing - but this is not mandatory.
Edge stones or gluing
If needed, set edge stones for lateral boundaries. Alternatively, edge pieces can be fixed with PU adhesive to prevent shifting. For curves or special stability requirements, spot gluing is recommended.
Fill joints (optional)
If you laid the stones with joint spacing: Fill the joints with jointing grit (grain size 1-3 mm). Sweep the grit diagonally into the joints and lightly water the surface.
Final compaction
Optionally, you can lightly compact the laid surface with a plate compactor (with rubber apron). This ensures an even surface.
Tips for optimal results
- Lay the stones in dry weather for better results.
- Mix stones from different pallets for even color distribution.
- Plan for approx. 5% more stones for cutting and replacement.
- If needed, rubber paving stones can be cut with a jigsaw.
Alternative: Gluing
Rubber paving stones are usually laid loose on a grit bed. Gluing is only recommended at edges, in curves, or for special stability requirements.
Suitable Adhesive
Polyurethane adhesive (PU adhesive) is best suited for rubber paving stones. It is elastic, waterproof, and weather-resistant. Available as one- or two-component cartridge adhesive for spot fixing.
Steps for Gluing
- 1Substrate (concrete/asphalt) must be dry, clean, and grease-free
- 2Lay out stones dry first and check fit
- 3Apply adhesive in spots on the underside of the stone (approx. 2-3 cm from the edge)
- 4Press stone firmly onto the substrate
- 5For edge pieces, glue the end faces together
- 6Observe curing time (approx. 24 hours, do not load)
Note: Full-surface gluing eliminates water permeability. Therefore, spot gluing is usually the better choice.
